Is the comma after 'examination' necessary?

I had always wanted to take the GCE ‘A’ level examination, so as to get into a local university.

Is the comma after 'examination' necessary?

Thanks.

GCE was what GCSEs used to be called, a long time ago. A levels are a different kind of qualification. You have confused the two.
