Speech & Pronunciation

Is the British accent so important when ESL students are learning English?

I´m an English teacher and when I´m giving class there are all these questions about pronunciation. I work with other teachers some from Ireland, London, Scotland, and Americans. Each teacher is teaching with a different accent. Then the books are from British publishers and have the DVDs and CDs in British English, so the students think that they have to speak British English. Some of them sound okay if they try the British accent but some sound terrible because of their own mother tongue accent. What to do, what to do...? Any comments or suggestions?

Unfortunately it's a common problem for advanced learners. What accent should they use? I decided to learn American English because I thought British English sounded really awful.

  • Then I found out I thought so because I only knew posh RP, which tends to sound annoying.
  • I think you should teach the most common features of the most common accents, and then let each student choose the ones they like the most.
