2. The sentence would probably pass. I think it is structurally slightly faulty in the lack of parallelism between "beautified" and "turned the drab garden into".

If "drew" is omitted then "invited" is understood to govern the whole of "much praise and admiration from visitors ..." rather than just "much praise". There would not be a huge change in meaning since "drew" conveys broadly the same idea as "invited", and we probably assume anyway that the praise is likely to be from visitors.
