is that the correct way to say ...?

Hi I am working on some work and I need to say this:

Basil was a symbol of love in ancient Italy, leafs
of Basil in the hair of a young man has symbolized
his meanings of getting married.

is that the correct way to say it ? can I say that different / better ?

I think it would be clearer if you put it this way - Basil was a symbol of love in ancient Italy. Leaves of basil worn in a young man's hair showed his intentions of getting married. Does that help?

I think it would be clearer if you put it this way -

Basil was a symbol of love in ancient Italy. Leaves of basil worn in a young man's hair showed his intentions of getting married.

The correct plural is "leaves."
