Is that sentence correct?

Greetings.

I've found some sentence and would like to know if it's a correct one. Here it is:

If I started teaching myself bass aged 15, would I have started too late to ever make it in a band?

I don't quite understand why it's used with "would have started"? Maybe it should be "have I started too late to.."?

Many thanks.

Hi, If I had taught myself to play the bass guitar when I was 15, would it have been too late for me to succeed in a band? You should use the third conditional sentence. Regards

Thank you. But there's one thing I'd like to clarify: Can we use would have + ed only with if I had done smth? And we can't use that construction with the past simple tense, right?
