Is "that" a must in these sentences?

I heaved a sigh of relieve after hearing (that) you are fine.

I am so happy after knowing (that) you have won the championship.

May i know if that is compulsory in these two sentences? And the theory behind this? I feel that "that" is optional in these two sentences based on daily conversation.

Yes, they are optional. I would use "learning" in the second sentence instead of "knowing", because you still know that one has won the championship.
