No, it's not just you.

Final "s" is the unvoiced sound /s/ only after /p/, /t/, /k/, /f/, and /?/. It's the voiced sound /z/ in all other cases.

/s/: caps, fits, tacks, laughs, fifths
/z/: rims, tins, rings, tubs, moods, rugs, ... toes, flaws, boys
