Is 'started' correctly used?

When I played a prank on one of my friends, he was offended. From then onwards, I started to be careful when joking with friends.

Is 'started' correctly used?

Thanks.

From a strictly logical perspective possibly not, since starting something is not an ongoing process. However, in practice it is normal and natural English. I would say "from then on " though.
