Is 'sit' transitive in 'I will sit an exam'?

Everywhere I've looked online says 'sit' is an intransitive verb, but is it transitive in the sentence 'I will sit an exam' and does that mean it can be both depending on the context?

Yes, though I believe this transitive usage is not used in American English.
