Is Ramp Up a noun?

"I would say the biggest challenge is as they head into this ramp up is making sure 787 is as profitable for themselves as they hope it will be for their customers," Ostrower said.

(source CNN: http://edition.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/08/07/boeing.dreamliner/index.html )

Does he mean,

"the biggest challenge is that this ramp up is making sure that 787 is as profitable for..... "

in other words,

"the biggest challenge for them is to make this ramp up lead to success for them as well as their customers."

?

What does "ramp up" mean here?

Thanks.

Hi, This is how I would interpret this sentence: Liveinjapan "I would say the biggest challenge is , as they [ refers to Boeing] head into this ramp up , is making sure 787 is as profitable for themselves as they hope it will be for their customers [ meaning the airlines that have placed order for this plane] ," Becuase of the technical problems revolving the building of this plane, there were already several delays with delivery which translates mounting cost for Boeing, and as airlines cannot fly this new jet as they had scheduled, the bottom line for the airlines is compromised. is making sure 787 is as profitable for themselves as well as their customers " refers to the challenges of maintaining production cost in line with forecast, product reliability, on time delivery, and customer ownership costs in a large manufacturing environment. "Ramp up", in the manufacturing context, refers to increase production capacity, which can be used as noun or verb.

Hi,

They designed a new airliner, they have been producing like two per month, and now they are considering 'ramping up' production. In other words, they would like to produce more of them.

The term "ramp up" in this sentence apparently is a noun meaning something like "new territory"--the 787 is a brand new concept in airliners, a huge plane being produced in large numbers. As they head into this "new territory", it's going to be a challenge for Boeing.

This is difficult to understand because the quote is from an aviation magazine, where they would use the specific jar
