Is "outside the window" or "outside of the window" strange to say?

Is "outside the window" or "outside of the window" strange to say?

(1) There is a tree outside the window.
(2) There is a tree outside of the window.

Top answer

To me, both the sentences sounds odd because I'd think trees are usually simply outside . There's a tree outside. But if you want to say that you see something through a window glass, I'd say something like, "I see a rainbow out of my window".
