Is Populism Used Disapprovingly?

According to dictionaries, populism means ideas and activities that claim to promote the interests and opinions of ordinary people. I think the definition itself is good and fits democracy perfectly. But, Cambridgie dictionary says 'mainly disapproving.' Why is it used disapprovingly? Although it's natural that the elite are oppsed to populism, I mean, ordinary people think the word as negative?
