Is "pile up" the only answer?

It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it fall down [pile up]. One morning, I walked slowly downstairs and was surprised to see a snow remover clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman clearing my walk. I dropped to my knees and crawled back upstairs, so those good people would not see me.

In the sentence It snowed ..., while I ... watched it ______ there are a great many ways to fill in the blank. 'fall down' and 'pile up' are just two of them.

It's OK, but just "fall" is better because we so often use "fall down" to describe what happens when a person slips or stumbles on something. Snow falls. People stumble and fall down.
