would correct grammar be used in this statement? My neighbor petted his dog for 2 hours.

Grammatically fine. Seems like a long time to spend doing that, though. Also, some style guides recommend spelling numbers less than ten - i.e., you would write two hours, not 2 hours.

"Pet" can be a verb.
