Is 'participants in attendance' correct?

Welcome to this auspicious function. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the large number of participants in attendance.

Is the part in bold correct?

Thanks.

It is correct if they really are participants, but even if they are, it's a little cold. It sounds like the opening of a speech. I'm not sure it's good to speak to people in the third person and label them by their purpose.
