Is paper towel countable?

Hi,

Is paper towel countable?

Use [a/zero article] paper towel to clean up that mess.

I guess it could be both somehow, though that still is confusing to me.

Thanks!

Thanks! I have a hard time imagining how it can be countable when toilet paper is uncountable. Both are rolls of paper. Your help is much appreciated.

It's because towel is countable, and paper is not.

Does that mean that a paper towel is considered one sheet of paper towel?

Basically, yes, although if you tore off a two sheet section to mop up a spill most people wouldn't care if you called it a paper towel or some paper towels. If you had many sheets you would call them paper towels, plural.

MustAskUse a paper towel to clean up that mess.
But: Use (some) paper toweling to clean up that mess. (AmE)

"toweling" is the corresponding uncountable noun; however, it's not a word that is used very much.
