'is' or 'was' / sufferings of illnesses

20th July 2014 is/was the third Youth Activity of the year. On this day, youths of all ages gathered in the main hall of Kaimyo-in to learn more about how Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism is able to help overcome the sufferings of illnesses for patients and their families.

1. Should I use 'is' or 'was'?
2. Is 'sufferings of illnesses' correct?
