"is" or "was" my phd advisor?

I'm always confused about whether I should use the past tense or the present tense in some cases. For example, if I'm not a phd student anymore, then should I say "He is my PhD advisor" or "He was my PhD advisor"?

I'm confused because I think in the above sentences "PhD" kind of implys that the thing happened already, because I'm not a phd student anymore. In this case, should we use "was my advisor" or "is my advisor"?

Many thanks in advance.

I think this is not the correct board for this question. But I'm not sure how to delete it. Sorry.
