"is" or "was"

Dear all,
I had a friend, his name was Jhon.
I had a friend, his name is Jhon. I heard if the person is alive, present tense should be used. Is it right?

He told me that he had a friend, and his name was Jhon.
He told me that he had a friend, and his name is Jhon.

No. It's the other way around. If the person is dead, the past tense should be used.

I didn't understand which sentence is correct. You didn't mention it and I have seen both spelling for "John and Jhon".

The question of whether Jhon is dead doesn't come into it in this sentence. Extremely few people have a dead friend.
