Is or lie

Hi. I think my questions deal with word usage cases, in which the questions are being asked whether certain words like "is" and "lie" are correct in certain sentential (Is this the right word meaning "sentence?) contexts, and it seems fitting for me to ask questions in this forum. Could you help me by explaining when we could use the words "lie" and "is" in the context of placing some places like countries and seas geographically.

Are these correct? If they are, could you tell me why the first sentence can't have "lie" as its verb?

1. This country is (could we use "lie" here?) between certain two countries.

2. This sea lies between certain two countries.
