Is or are with uncountable noun

Hi. Which verb is correct? I am sorry for not providing you with full sentences. As a side note, I think the verb for the number 3 sentence should be "are," because I take it to mean both "the function of the old equipment they have" and "the function of the new equipment the have."

1. The old and new equipment they have is/are ...

2. Both old and new equipment is/are used ...

3. The function of both old and new equipment they have is/are ...

Top answer

Since the sentences seem to be distinguishing between 2 kinds of equipment, the plural verb sounds better to me, and in #3 the plural 'functions' should be used.
