Is or are in a question with somewhat plural subject

Which is correct:

Is Dick and Jane coming to town? or Are Dick and Jane coming to town?

"Are" sounds better to me since the phrase "Dick and Jane" seems plural, but maybe they are a singular unit.

Interesting. Same words, but as people, they are plural, as a movie title, it is singular.
