Everyone except my cousins is/are going to attend the concert tonight.

Which one is the correct answer? is or are? And why? Thank you

Everyone is going to attend ... That's the basic sentence. Adding 'except my cousins' doesn't change anything.

Califjim is right, as always, but "is" sure sounds wrong, doesn't it? I would certainly recast as "Everyone is going to attend the concert tonight except my cousins."
