Is or are?

Hi there,

Please consider the following:
- His hair is the same colour as the walls, as if him and the room ARE one being; OR
- His hair is the same colour as the walls, as if him and the room IS one being.

My gut is telling me it's ARE, because it just sounds right to me, but I could be completely wrong. Thanks in advance!
