Is or are ?

Wandering around a mall and randomly taking something out (is/are) not something new to me.

I think "are" is correct but somehow it sounds weird to me.

Wandering around a mall and randomly taking something is not something new to me . The choice of verb is initially open, but you closed it with your second 'something'.
