is or are?

I'm having trouble with the current sentence: The disciplinarian's ability to keep calm during high stress situations is vital to successfully discipline a child using non-violent methods.

I think i've read the sentence one too many times, now I can't tell if "is" or "are" is correct. When I change the sentence to "are" in microsoft word, it gives a grammatical error, but I just wanted to double check with the community.

Thank You,

Tim
