Is or are?

Question

In this sentence: A major import product is China’s automobiles.

Should it be is China's or are China's? The reson I ask is because product is singular, but the product mentioned (the autos) is plural. Thank you in advance.

It is a fabulous as well as a good learning question in Subject Verb Agreement problem. I think the sentence has subject complement which is a noun phrase and must be agree with the subject.So, it should be writen like this;

A major import product is Chana's automobile. = Chana's automobile is a major import product.

Or

The major import products are Chana's automobiles.= Chana's automobiles are the major import products.

If we use automobile as a subject complement, then the subject must be singular which means A mojor import product and if we use automobiles, then the subject should be plural which means The major import products. This is what my grammar knowledge suggets me, and it adjusts the Subject Verb Agreement. I will investigate and search more about it to see if I could share more accurate answer.Anyway, it was a nice question that I have faced after a long time and happy to face.

I admit that I occasionally make a typo in replies, but there are so many errors in your post, that it seems to be carelessness, not typing errors.
