Hi. Please help. Which should they be, is or are?

1. Cookies or a box of candies is/are a good gift to give.

2. All the fame and (all the) fortune is/are not going to do much good to him now.

Which should they be, is or are?

1. Cookies or a box of candies is/are a good gift to give.

2. All the fame and (all the) fortune is/are not going to do much good to him now.

Cookies or a box of candies is a good gift to give. ( here the noun (cookies) though plural, gives one idea to the mind (good gift) and hence the verb is singular in form.
