is or are

Hi, I'm unsure about the two extracts...

1) Things being thrown from the stands IS/ARE a concern (I think 'are', but I have a sneaky feeling it's 'is'!)

2) All of the things he has done IS/ARE disgraceful (Here I think 'are')

Thanks

I agree with you, Goodman. Even though the word 'things' is plural, it is not simply the 'things' themselves that are a concern. It is the 'throwing of things' (i.e. this particular activity) that is a concern.

But what about...

Good question, Anon.

I'd say the addition of the word 'the' would change the meaning somewhat and place the focus of the concern more on the 'things' themselves and less on the activity. In that case, I'd go for 'are'.

1) Things being thrown from the stands IS/ARE a concern (I think 'are', but I have a sneaky feeling it's 'is'!) Yes, it is "it's".
