Is ommiting possible without a preposition?

A) The modern jet airliner that / which we spent millions of dollars to build is a unique example of the aircraft production.
B) The modern jet airliner ---- we spent millions of dollars to build is a unique example of the aircraft production.
C) The modern jet airliner for which we spent millions of dollars to build is a unique example of the aircraft production.

Of the above sentences only "C" sounds correct to me, but a book I have says "that" and "which" are omitable in the sentence thus getting "B" . Let alone they are interchangeable, I don't understand why the sentence is correct without the preposition "For"

Hi,
Don't put 'on' in those places.
Here's the basic idea.

You spend money to do something. eg I spent $50 to buy a book.
You spend money on something. eg I spent $50 on a book.

You could say 'I spent $50 on buying a book'.
