Is "occur" the right verb in this context?

Hi,

Is "occur" the right verb in the sentence below?

"When free radicals attack unsaturated fatty acid in the cell membrane, lipid peroxidation occurs; and MDA is produced in the cell as a lipid peroxidation biomarker. An Increase in the generation of free radical at high levels of light intensity leads to an increase in the MDA levels.
