Is my sentence ok?

I was hard pressed for time because I started from the scratch and have not taken any similar language test before. To pursue my study, I put my life on the line to achieve level 3

None is wrong in itself, but thrown together, they are too many and too much, and they mar the register, which was more formal with such words as 'similar' and 'pursue my studies'.
