Please excuse me for butting in, dear members, but here - I live in New Delhi, India - I hear "appear for an exam" more frequently than I hear "sit for an exam". I am not suggesting that "sit for an exam" is wrong, but I think people around me, and even I, use or utter "appear for an exam" more often.

In British and American English you sit or take exams. British speakers use both. American speakers use take more than sit. Appear for an exam is a phrase that would be unfamiliar to most British or American speakers.
