Can I rephrase the following sentence:

"her thinking has been seminal in challenging complacency around notions of designated public space thereby automatically being democratic space"

as

"her ideas have played an essential role in challenging the satisfaction that exists around "designated public spaces" and "the fact that spaces can automatically be democratic"?
