00In reported speech format, this sentence will be constructed from the original sentence below:02br
02br
00<Earlier today> My car cooling system is leaking!.02br
02br
00Later, it is reported as:02br
02br
00I found out my car cooling system 01font00was02font00 leaking.02br
02br
00Since the verb used is 'was' in reported speech, why the original sentence is still considered correct?02br
02br
00Here's my take:02br
02br
00In reported speech, generally the writer looks at incidents/events as past events though the events could still be true up to the present. Just to be on the safe side, the writer will usually mention the events in the past tense unless he/she is very certain that the events are still true up to the present. In this example, it is fine to use both 'is' or 'was' because the writer 05000 has the knowledge that this event is still true up to the present. It is up to me to decide whether to view this event as something in the past or present. Most likely, I will use "is" as it best reflects the event.02br

00Please correct me if I am wrong. This is always my nightmare.010id90

0In my native language, there is no past tense. We use 'time' to indicate past tense, for example, yesterday, last month, etc. That's why my nightmare is bigger than yours 05002br

00In reported speech, I believe I have some ideas when to use what like I mentioned but still unsure. However, the tough ones belong to this category:02br
