Is known vs. was known

I want to known if is correct to say for example: is known vs. was known

When the Celts came to the islands of Britain , the period is known as .......

or

When the Celts came to the islands of Britain , the period was known as .......

Anonymous When the Celts came to the islands of Britain , the period is/was known as .. In my opinion, "is" makes more sense, but I hear both versions. " They probably had a name for it back then too, but I doubt that I'd be able to pronounce it.
