Is Italy a "she"?
Hi all,
I was reading some articles written by an American journalist in the early 20s and I was surprised to see that he referred to Italy as a "she":
Italy has a big economic potential and she is handling it amazingly. It is great to see with what patience Italy is handling her situation.
I was wondering if this is a kind of "old-fashioned" usage of pronouns or if it happens even nowadays.

It used to be quite common for writers to refer to a country in the feminine (being favored over fthe concept of fatherland). I'm not sure how common it is today.

Oh I see, thanks Philip. I've never seen a writer calling a country as "she" so far, it's good to see that it's common among writers to do so. I was kind of shocked when I read the article!
