Is it Who am I inside or What am I inside?

I have come across this sentence "I prefer to be loved for what I am inside". Instead of "what", isn't "who" should be used in the sentence? Please advise.

"I prefer to be loved for what/who I am inside." are both okay and mean essentially the same thing. This is similar in principle to a sentence like: "I'm the one who/that called this morning and hung up before you answered."
