Is it 'was' or 'were' in these?

Was or Were below?


1. He had a number of problems, but taxes was/were the immediate problem.


2. All I could think of was/were the children.


3. All that was in the lawyer's safe was/were seven gold coins, two wooden candlesticks, and an avocado.


4. Their position, even their lives, was/were now at risk.


5. John as well as his parents was/were entranced by the monkeys.


6. The zoo in addition to the parks was/were closed during the war.
