Is it true?

Hi,

Does this sentence mean that every country competing in a marketplace will be prospered?

More recently, Michael Porter’s The Competitive Advantage of Nations probably marked the point at which it became obvious that there is no other way for a country to prosper than by considering itself as a competitor in a single marketplace.

nesa Does this sentence mean that every country competing in a marketplace will be prospered? No, I wouldn't say so! The author simply says there's no other way.

  • No, I wouldn't say so!
  • The author simply says there's no other way.
  • When there's only one way to do something, and you choose that option, you may still fail!
  • As an aside, "will be prospered" (passive voice) is a new one on me.

Thank you Avangi. Of course this was a sentence from a book Brand and Branding, but I didn't know the point you mentioned.

I'm embarrassed! The Webster online also lists a transitive meaning, "to cause to succeed or thrive."
Unfortunately, they don't offer an example.
I'm wondering if the usage is growing obsolete. I don't remember hearing it. It sounds biblical to me.
