Is it standard to use "ex" to indicate "for exmaple"

I assume many of you have seen this shorthand for the phrase "for example,
so can I use it in a formal paper to indicate the phrase?
Is it acceptable?

What's a better replacement here?
Are shorthanded abbreviations such as "e.g." and "i.e" definitely applicable to all situations?
If not, what are the usage differences?

No.

The recognised short form for 'for example' is 'eg/e.g.'

'ie/i.e.' is the short form for 'that is(to say)'.

But in a formal essay, use the full and unabbreviated phrase.
