Is it right to say?

Hi,

Are these sentences correct?

"Researchers would like to thank Mr. X for supporting this project."

"Researchers would like to thank Mr. X to support this project."

Is there any other way to write this sentence?

Thanks!

The first sentence is (almost) correct; the second sentence is not correct at all. The researchers OR Our researchers (not researchers in general). There are many variations possible: The researchers (here at XYZ University) would like to thank Mr.
