I'd use the verb 'go' if you're ringing from home:
"I won't be able to go to work today" (and now invent your excuse)

Both "with" and "to" are viable prepositions here. I suppose they may have different connotations. Perhaps with is a more personal approach. If you think about it (a native English speaker) speaking with your friend feels more intimate; personal. If you just speak to someone, it gives (at least to me) the impression that it's one-sided. I spoke to my friend... but they never replied! xD Hope that
