Is it really acceptable to say, 'They simply pass us by'?

I wonder why in my country people say, 'They simply pass us by' when they mean 'They merely pass along the way as if they don't notice us.'

Is it really acceptable to say, 'They simply pass us by'?

Do the Britons and the Americans speak this way?

Except in newspaper headlines, we British are rarely referred to as 'Britons'. We are (the) British, British people or, informally, Brits.
