is it proper to use a comma after the word "thanks"?

is it proper to use a comma after the closing thanks in a request letter or forum topic as in

<closing thanks>
thanks,

A period is fine. A comma is also fine, as long as you end with your name. I hope you realize that a letter also requires suitable capital letters and punctuation throughout.
