Is it ok to say?

The women ruled the household in absence of their husbands.

Top answer

Anonymous The women ruled the household in absence of their husbands. This is fine. You could optionally use "households" (plural), but to my ear the singular is more natural in this case.

Who cracks the whip in these families? (You wouldn't say "whips.")

I'd say these are fixed expressions.
