Is it incorrect?

An American major was killed and three American officers were wounded in what fresh accounts from the Afghan and American officers who were there reveal was a complex, calculated assault by a nominal ally.

Is the word form of the word "reveal" appropriate in this sentence? Why?

Hi, It's fine. The idea is that fresh accounts reveal something at the present time. Hence, the simple present.

Yes. 'reveal', is fine. The core clause here is 'what accounts...reveal'. This is a noun clause used as a subject for its matrix clause 'what accounts...reveal was...assault by a nominal ally'. This clause in turn is the noun object of the preposition 'in', which comprises a prepositional phrase acting as an adverb for the main clause 'An American...were wounded'.
