These kinds of widgets work well.

"well" answers the question "how?"
"good" answers the question "what kind (of)?"

What kind of widgets are they? They are good widgets.

How do they work? They work well.

OK?

Jim has covered it nicely, but let me just add:

'Well' modifies the verb, 'work'-- it tells how they work. It is an adverb meaning 'excellently'.

'They are good widgets'-- 'good' modifies the widgets, telling us their nature. It is an adjective meaning 'excellent'.

You could put them together and use both: 'These are good widgets; they work well!'
