Is it correct to use 's with an acronym?

If writing about an agency's mission and the agency ends in S, is it IRS's mission or IRS' mission? We all know IRS stands for Internal Revenue Service, but what about CMS, which is the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services?

Hi, Strictly speaking, you should end a singular abbreviation with an apostrophe ‘s’: ‘ IRS's mission ’. You should end a plural abbreviation ending with an ‘s’ with an apostrophe only: ‘ CMS' mission’ . If you want to avoid repeating the ‘s’, you can use the longer versions: ‘ the mission of IRS ’, ‘ the mission of CMS ’.

  • Frankly, in such cases it is better to avoid that ’apostrophe catastrophe’ and use the longer versions.
