Is it correct to understand "should" as "if" in these sentences?

Is it right to understand this sentence
"Should anyone call, please tell them I'm not here."
as "If anyone call, please tell them I'm not here."

Top answer

If anyone call s or better still: If anyone should call, tell them I'm not here. If + should makes it very unlikely in the speaker's opinion that someone might call. Omitting if and changing the word order is more formal style.
